Jamaica Under-21s lose again

Robert Bailey, Star Writer

The Australia Under-21 netballers thrashed the Jamaican Under-21 team 52-26 in their second game of the three-Test series at G.C. Foster College last night.

The Aussies, now lead the series 2-0, after outclassing the junior Sunshine Girls 60-27 in the opening game on Monday.

The Jamaicans began the game slowly, trailing their opponents 11-7 at the end of the first period.

The Australians stepped up their defence in the second quarter, which led to eight turnovers from the Jamaicans, which saw the the hosts outscored (15-3) for a 26-10 lead at half time.

Jamaica's coach, C. Lloyd Walker, then made two substitutions at the start of the third period, bringing on goal shooter Christina Solmon for Jhaniele Fowler and Patricia McCulla for Vanessa Walker.

However, Australia's Simone McKinnis proved equal to the task, as her team increased the tempo and ran rings around the young Sunshine Girls. Their quick passing and frisk off-the-ball movement resulted in their goal shooter, Caitlin Bassett, converting nine of her game-high 26 in the period, as the Australians ran out to a 40-16 lead at end of the stanza.

The Jamaicans never recovered as the Aussies maintained their advantage in the fourth period and cruised to a comfortable victory.

Bassett received solid support from teammates Sophie Craft, 11 goals from 15 attempts, and Kim Borger, six goals from 11 tries.

Jhaniele Flower, 17 goals from 23 attempts, and Crystal Gordon six goals from nine tries, were the top scorers for the Jamaicans.

The final match in the series will be played tomorrow at the same venue starting at 10 a.m. Both teams are using the series as part of their preparation for the World Youth Championships, which will be held in the Cook Islands in August.
