Fanty gunning for the upset

Petra Fanty of Holmwood. - Anthony Foster

NAME: Petra Fanty

D.O.B: 29.1.92

CLASS: Two

SCHOOL: Holmwood

EVENTS: 200m, 400m, 4x400m

PR: 24.2 (200m), 54.04 (400m)

MAIN RIVALS AND WHY: Samantha Woodburn, her teammate, and Danielle Dowie of Wolmer's, because of their times this season.

LAST YEAR'S PERFORMANCE: Fanty just barely missed out on a medal in the 100m (12.04) and placed sixth in the 200m (25.56).

EXPECTATION THIS YEAR: Fanty targets a win in the 400m and would also like to run 52 seconds in what has now become her pet event.

NOTE: Fanty, the 2005 Class Four sprint double champion, has not tasted victory at Champs since then. However, this year, more determined than ever, Fanty could put on her best showing since her Class Four glory days. Although trailing Woodburn and Dowie, the two athletes she identified as her rivals, a 400m victory for Fanty may not come as a surprise on April 4, the final day of Champs. In the 200m, if Fanty, 2008 Carifta Games Under-17 4x100m and 4x400m gold medallist, is chosen to run over Yanique Ellington or Shericka Moulton, she could also do well. In that event, she would have Vere's duo of Deandre Whitehorn and Celia Walters to contend with in the half-lap event.
