Mr Lee, or George, as he is affectionately called, was given a citation and Portmore Parkway was renamed 'George Lee Boulevard' in honour of the former mayor. The citation was read by Karen Kennedy, principal of Portmore Community College.
Mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds, had promised to reward Lee for paving the way for him by renaming a thoroughfare in his honour.
"I feel a sense of joy inside being able to honour my word to the citizens of Portmore, and know that George (Lee) deserves this award because I followed him around for four and a half years," Mayor Hinds said. "I say to you it, you have worked and worked tirelessly."
Lee's, wife, Aneita, was praised for supporting her husband throughout his tenure as mayor.
Lee, in his response, thanked the Lord, his wife and all who worked in his administration.
The event was well attended by members of the political arena, the Portmore Ministers Fraternal, the Portmore Chamber of Commerce and Industries, among other civic organisations, and the general public, friends and well-wishers.
The stretch of road, formerly named Portmore Parkway, is a major thoroughfare that leads from the Waterford Parkway to Bayside and passes between several communities, namely Portsmouth, Passagefort, Edgewater, Bridgeview and Bridgeport.
