For his decision to try and export cocaine, Adrian Moodie, will spend the next four years in jail.
Moodie, who is charged with possession, dealing and taking steps to export the drugs, was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The court was told that Moodie was preparing to leave the island for London when his luggage was searched and 1 kg (2.25 lb), was found in his suitcase. A lawyer representing the accused told the court that Moodie, 26, was an interior decorator.
He said his client was driven to such actions because of the financial trials he was facing. He said Moodie's aunt had died leaving four children, who he was now caring for. He said his client was sorry for what had happened.
Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown sentenced Moodie to two years imprisonment at hard labour each for possession and taking steps to export the drug. He was admonished and discharged for dealing in drugs.
