Suspects held in jewellery theft

The police have held at least five suspects in connection with the theft of millions of dollars worth of cash and jewellery from the home of Prakash Vaswani, popular businessman and former chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, last month.

Investigators from the St Andrew Central police say they were alerted sometime last month by Vaswani who reported that cash, along with some items, was taken from a vault at his home in St Andrew.

The police say Vaswani noted that the items included precious stones such as diamonds and pearls as well as expensive family jewellery.

Further reports are that Vaswani's helper was arrested in connection with the incident after the cops found no sign of forced entry.

As the investigations continued, two businessmen who operate jewellery stores in downtown Kingston were also held and some of the stolen jewellery recovered on the weekend.

They were subsequently released after providing information which led to the arrest of two other suspects.

The names of all suspects are being withheld pending further investigations.
