Cops probe violent robberies

The Westmoreland Police are investigating three incidents involving two rapes, two abductions and two robberies that occurred in the parish on Tuesday night.

In the first incident, a couple was robbed about 9:15 p.m. on their arrival at their home in Kingswood. They were held up at gunpoint by three men who took their cellphones as well as $2,650 and US$650 (J$57,200).

The robbers then abducted the wife and sexually assaulted her. She was later found by police officers in a nearby cane field.

At midnight, the police learnt that a mother and her daughter were held up in the neighbouring district of Farm Pen. The mother was left stranded along the road while two armed men abducted her daughter and stole her SUV.

The vehicle was intercepted by the police along the Hertford main road but the criminals eluded the lawmen in bushes. The daughter was rescued unharmed and the vehicle recovered.

Shortly after that incident, the police had to rush to Williamsfield less than three miles away where a female schoolteacher was raped. They believe that the same men who stole the SUV and abducted the young girl are responsible for the incident with the teacher, but investigators are unsure whether they are also responsible for the first incident earlier at Kingswood.
