WESTERN BUREAU: With events taking place in Negril, Westmoreland, on a weekly basis, and in some instances multiple events occurring simultaneously, the resort town seems poised to become the entertainment hotspot in western Jamaica. On Good Friday, the popular tourist strip - the Norman Manley Boulevard - was abuzz with activities. But what seemed to have been the event for the night was the maiden staging of the WOW (Weekend Out West) Heineken Good Times Party at The Jungle nightclub. Great time
Hopeton Brown, event coordinator of Mile High Entertainment, said the concept to stage a weekend of parties came about in January. "This will be an annual event from here on and patrons can look forward to the parties during the Easter weekend," he said. Patrons of varying age groups descended on the venue and had a great time - partying beyond 4 a.m. last Saturday. On the 'deck', DJs Denvo and Kurt Riley of FAME FM kept the audience glued to the dance floor, as they spun a torrent of '70s popular songs, interspersed with current hits. Around 1 a.m. there was a lull in the dancing. Apparently realising that the audience needed to be rejuvenated, the DJs dipped into their collection. Up came Bobby Day's 1970s hit song, Rocking Robin, and again the crowd went wild - literally everybody jumped back onto the dance floor and, before you knew it, there was hardly space to move. The tempo continued with songs such as Wham's Wake Me Up, Kenny G's Foot Loose, Wake Up Little Suzie, followed by Beenie Man's Gal In A Bungle and Who Am I (Sim Simmer). The excitement ended on the 'deck', but moved downstairs into the main club where the fun, heavy drinking, smoking and loud pulsating music grooved into the early morning.
