Breeders' Cup still on track for Santa Anita

ARCADIA, California (AP)

Breeders' Cup officials say they still intend to stage horse racing's year-end world championships at Santa Anita in November despite the track's owner filing for bankruptcy.

The Breeders' Cup said yesterday it was working with Santa Anita management and its attorneys to obtain the necessary approvals from the bankruptcy court so the two-day event can take place as planned.

Magna Entertainment Corp filed for bankruptcy in March. The company is seeking approval from a Delaware bankruptcy court to auction off its properties, including Santa Anita.

If issues surrounding the bankruptcy cannot be resolved, Breeders' Cup has the option of moving the November 6-7 event to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

revenge!

Meanwhile, possible Kentucky Derby favourite I Want Revenge has hit the track at Churchill Downs in one of his final major workouts before next week's race.

The three-year-old colt covered five furlongs in 1:01 3-5 seconds with 19-year-old jockey Joe Talamo aboard on Tuesday. Trainer Jeff Mullins said he was pleased with the work on a track still a little muddy from heavy rain the day before.

Pioneer of the Nile, trained by newly minted US Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, covered the same distance in 1:00 4-5. Baffert said he plans to work the Santa Anita Derby winner at least one more time before the Derby on May 2.

Chocolate Candy, piloted by Mike Smith, breezed a mile (1,600m) in 1:42.
