An ode to my island home

Today I write about Colin Ferguson and Steven Fray,

And about Jamaica making the news yet again, in a phenomenal way.

My Friend P and I continue to be amazed,

How little Jamaica can set the world ablaze.

With news of exploits of our people good and bad,

That makes us ecstatic and then makes us mad and sad.

It is not yet one year since every corner of the globe knew our name,

Thanks to the toil of our Beijing Olympians and their fame.

Bolt, VC, Melaine and that girl Shelly Ann,

Lead from the front a team that proved Yes We Can!

Delivering gold after gold run that made us drunk for a week,

Beckoning visitors to our shores in quest of the secret magic sweet.

All over the planet earth our 7 letter name was typed,

Jamaicans in every corner of the world lived and breathed the hype.

Now eight months later the world of joy is swept away,

All courtesy of the frolicking of MoBay boy Steven Fray.

A youth breaks into an airport and commandeers a plane,

Holds the passengers hostage with a gun, one might think he was insane,

Again the world media typed our name, a slow news day?,

Or was this again classic news the Jamaican way?

Chilling memories return of Colin Ferguson going berserk,

A Jamaican killing people in a New York train, must be a quirk.

'Ah some sick white people do dem thing deh a foreign' NOT,

Truth is that our paradise has its own breed of sick got.

Thankful we are that Fray did not hurt or kill a soul,

Except a stab to the heart of tourism product we sometimes call gold.

Oh, of course we smart a little as our new résumé grows we concede,

Top killing field, golden sprint factory, classic coffee and still A-class weed,

Colin the delusional murderer, Colin an American General, Jodi Ann world speller,

Do we really have space for a resident the hi-jacker? We will ask the storyteller.

Ah boy here we go again ... little Jamaica running the news world.
