Big buss for 'Jamaican Boy'

Maqueda - file

In this weekly Mus' Buss Caan Buss song review feature, three musical minds will analyse each song and grade it on vocal ability, lyrics, musical arrangement and appeal. Songs that make the grade will be dubbed 'Mus' Buss', while those that flop will be dumped in the 'Caan Buss' bin.

This week the Muss Buss/Caan Buss team will be reviewing newcomer Maqueda's Jamaican Boy (KeepLeft Records).

King Kong: "Yeah, it cool and jazzy."

Queen: "Reminds me of I'm Still In Love With You."

King Kong: "It's only less annoying. She sounds like Estelle in Come Over."

Witch: "Yeah, this song really reminds me of the Estelle and Sean Paul. I like the old style vibe it have, but inna a way it still modern. Maqueda has a nice, full-bodied voice, like she can belt it out when she ready. The production on it mad too; di beat wicked."

Queen: "It has a nice, groovy shag-a-delic vibe."

King Kong: "Mi like how it comes naturally, like she a do it and she not even a think bout it, kinda like a Super Cat kinda thing."

Queen: "I agree. I like how it comes natural. The riddim and di whole production just bring back memories of old-time dancehall, rub-a-dub era, rent a tile kinda vibe."

King Kong: "This song mus listen wid diamond socks and mesh merino and Kangol hat."

Witch: "Yea, and for a new singer it's a very good first song."

Queen: "True. Hope, she don't turn into a one-hit wonder 'cause mi woulda listen to other songs from her. Using an old riddim was a smart trick and varying it was even smarter. It immediately makes it memorable for people. The quality of the production is very good. She nah shout, she naturally a sing."

Witch: "Leftside in the background sound nice wid 'Maqueda for the people!' That's so old-school."

King Kong: "I agree. Mi love how Leftside a show his versatility in it. Mi love di arrangement. It buss for me."

Queen: "Mi definitely have to give this song a buss local, international, dancehall, everywhere. It is definitely going places. Looking out for it on Billboard."

Witch: "Yeah, I can see this as a radio hit and in the dancehall too. If dem market it well with a nice video it can get some foreign airplay as well."
