Man accused of blinding mother

In what could well be described as a case of biting the hand that feeds, Maurice Jackson is accused of assaulting his mother causing her to be blind in one eye.

The incident reportedly occurred after Jackson's mother stood surety for him so he could be bailed.

Jackson is charged with felonious wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard that last September, Jackson was taken before the court for assaulting his sister. It is alleged that he hit her in the face, used a piece of iron to hit her in the back and used stones to destroy the windshield of her car.

The court was told that Jackson had a case in the Gun Court, for which he was granted bail and his mother acted as surety.

Shortly after being released, it is alleged that Jackson, during an argument with his mother, hit her in the face and held her by the neck. When she ran, he reportedly stoned the house. His mother was hit in the right eye and is now blind in that eye. Her nose was also broken during the incident.

A lawyer representing Jackson unsuccessfully applied for bail. He said Jackson had a seven-month-old child who was completely dependent on him. Resident Magistrate Sonia Bertram-Linton denied the application. The medical report in the case is still outstanding. Jackson returns to court on May 20.
