Man accused of stabbing gets light sentence

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey offered a light sentence to a man accused of stabbing a young man.

The accused, Timothy Smith, was given the option of six months in prison or to pay a fine of $15,000 Wednesday at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court.

It is reported that Smith and the complainant had a dispute the day before the incident. It is said that the accused attacked the complainant from behind. The complainant was stabbed twice by the accused.

minor misunderstanding

Not dismissing that he stabbed the complainant, Smith told the court that he injured the complainant as a means of defending himself.

Smith told the court that he and the complainant had a minor misunderstanding the day before the incident. The accused added that the morning before the incident he was tending to his yard and flowers when he saw the complainant and tried to talk to him about their previous disagreement.

gardening knife

This confrontation, he said, became violent, as Smith said the complainant took up two stones and threw at him. He (Smith) said that he retaliated by taking his gardening knife from his back pocket and swung at the complainant. The accused said he was only aware of one of the wounds.

The complainant received a stab in his head and another in his back. He said he ran to the nearest police station and Smith fled the scene.
