The complainant in the extortion case against Superintendent Harry 'Bungles' Daley was wired for six months with a mini-camera to record the meeting and handing over of alleged protection money. The complainant, Tafari Clarke, made the startling disclosure yesterday at Superintendent Daley's trial in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. Clarke said the police wired him with the camera after he made a complaint to the Anti-Corruption Branch that he was paying protection money to Superintendent Daley. Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey granted a short adjournment yesterday to give the prosecution time to have the video tapes taken to court. video tapes After the video tapes were presented in court, defence lawyer Valerie Neita-Robertson objected to them being tendered in evidence. Acting Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Dirk Harrison submitted that the video tapes could be tendered in evidence through the complainant because his voice was recorded on it. RM Pusey is to rule today as to whether the video tapes will be tendered in evidence through the complainant. Clarke testified that he was in charge of a plaza in Ewarton, St Catherine, which his uncle had built, and he collected rent from the tenants. He said Daley told him in 2007 that he should pay $20,000 per month for protection money. paid money He said he paid less than the $20,000 sometimes because he did not have that amount. He said he met with Superintendent Daley on St Johns Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, where he paid the money. Clarke said in February 2008, he made a complaint to the Anti-Corruption Branch of the police force and he was wired with a mini-camera to record the meeting and handing over of the protection money to Superintendent Daley. Superintendent Daley has been on trial since last week Monday. He is facing six counts of extortion and six counts of breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act. Superintendent Daley was allegedly held by the police in July last year during a sting operation collecting $15,000 from Clarke. The Crown is alleging that Superintendent Daley collected a total of $65,000 from Clarke between May 2007 and July 2008. |
