Goals galore in Claro/KSAFA women's football

The 2009 Claro/KSAFA women's Under-20 5-A-Side football league kicked off with a bang last Sunday with 76 goals scored in seven games.

With nine teams entered, Water-house registered the largest win of the first day when they swamped New Kingston 25-0. Shanique Mitchell and Trudy-Ann Douglas both scored six goals each, while Teashian Thomas netted four, Andella Gonzalves bagged a hat-trick, J'vonelle Simpson, Dicoda Evans, Davia Morrison all had a brace, and Shevarne Edwards completed the rout.

Waterhouse also shut out Brown's Town 10-0 on three-timers by Shantel Thomas and Trudy-Ann Douglas. A double by Shanique Mitchell and single strikes by Davia Morrison and Andella Gonzalves preserved the win.

Maverley/Hughenden blanked Shortwood United 9-0 on double strikes by Monique Pryce, Shana-Kay Durrant Junielle Watkins and Genesha Pickersgill. National defender Melissa Madden, netted the other.

Santos Bell Chung Girlz were edged 5-4 by Meadhaven United after leading 4-2 at the half. A hat-trick by Shanise Foster and a brace by Vanessa Ramsay gave Meadhaven a hard-fought win, while Ann-Kay Williams and Onecia Bailey scored twice for Santos.

Santos rebounded from their loss to maul Molynes United 13-0 on a fine seven-goal performance by Anna-Kay Williams and a triple strike by Onecia Bailey. Yanique Jarrett scored twice, while Johnicka Johnson scored for the Girlz.

In other games, Shortwood United suffered their second big loss of the day when they went down 8-0 to Constant Spring. Trudy Carter scored six times, and Nugene Nugent and Tiffany Nash completed the shutout. Arnett Gardens and Olympic Gardens played to a 1-1 draw. Alecia Mullins put Olympic ahead in the second minute, but Chevel Martin equalised for Arnett in the 25th minute.

In the colourful opening ceremony and dress parade, KSAFA president, Rudolph Speid, pledged the full support of KSAFA to the development of women's football in Kingston and St Andrew. Santos Bell Chung Girlz bagged the Best Dressed team award. Anna-Kay Williams of Santos and Trudy-Ann Douglas of Waterhouse are the leading goal scorers with nine goals each. The league continues on Sunday, May 2 at the National Water Commission Field, Mona.
