The police were kept busy and on high alert yesterday as roadblocks were mounted sporadically in sections of St Catherine and the Corporate Area.

Demonstrators took to the streets and vented their anger at the newly announced tax package.

In St Catherine, roadblocks were mounted in Central Village, along March Pen Road, Spanish Town Bypass and Brunswick Avenue in Spanish Town and along the Port Henderson road in Portmore.

When THE STAR visited the Spanish Town Police Station, a detachment of policemen and soldiers was seen leaving with a bulldozer and truck to attend to reports of disturbances in section of the division.

cleared

Residents of Central Village and the police reportedly played a game of cat and mouse throughout the day as roadblocks were replaced each time they were cleared.

In the Corporate Area, there were reported roadblocks along Washington Boulevard, Molynes Road and Old Hope Road, close to the Commissioner's Office and in the Marverley community.

Stone-throwing protesters in Marverley reportedly dumped debris and placed an old overturned car into the roadway before setting it on fire. The roadblock was eventually cleared by firefighters

Checks with the police revealed that a number of persons were arrested in connection with the mounting of roadblocks while there was at least one reported case of someone being injured.

robbed

The Hunts Bay police say a woman was cut on the hand as protesters along the Washington boulevard threw anything they could find into the street. The same woman was also reportedly robbed of her cellphone.

Police sources said at least seven persons have been slapped with charges, including breaches of the Solid Waste, Public Order and Road Traffic Acts, as well as malicious destruction of property.
