Mentor goes extra mile for students

There are now 35 students on the Braeton Primary and Junior High School's Mentorship Programme, up from 30, and one mentor has gone the extra mile to provide $40,000 worth of food items to the school.

Marjorie Michelle Hinds, wife of Portmore Mayor Keith Hinds, handed over the items at the institution on Monday, June 1.

Among the items donated were bags of counter flour and cases of juices, for the school's home economics department.

"As a mentor, I know the donation can help in the baking project that they have undertaken at the school, so these items will help them with some well-needed ingredients,'' said Mrs Hinds.

A number of students who were seen busily removing goods to the storage area said they were thankful for the gesture of goodwill.

"Yes, sir, the school will benefit from the donation and other persons need to come on board to help out. It makes a difference,'' said Norman Brown, a student.

Principal Fitz Jackson told THE PORTMORE STAR since the inception of the programme on March 8, indiscipline at the school has been on the decline.

"The programme has worked wonders for the school, as some of the wayward students now believe someone cares. I must also thank Mark Jackson for doing his best to make the programme a success so far,'' Jackson said.

Jackson, who is the dean of discipline at the school, was instrumental in getting a number of persons considered to be good role models to mentor a child and help to enhance discipline at the school.
