Let him rest in peace

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Gleaner's editorial of June 8, 2009, spoke of a very dear friend of mine, Joseph Burey. It is truly unfortunate that his name is still being called after he has died nearly half a decade ago. He needs to have some peace and rest in his grave.

Joe was an upright and conscientious individual of immense potential. If you knew who the man Joe was, it wouldn't be hard for you to accept him as a distinguished person. I am responding to the character assassination of my dear friend who has passed on to a new and higher realm.

Since you don't know, Joe was a very respectful, peaceful, fun-loving, life-loving individual who had a passion for his country and countrymen. This is the second time since he has died that I have seen a newspaper 'bring him back to life' in an unfortunate way. I feel compelled to respond this time because he was a nice individual who deserves the best.

If he did something wrong, so let it be, but do not punish him in life and death. We all make mistakes and there are others who have done untold harm to society but are given the chance to make new starts.

Life is about how you live and your daily experiences in your time on earth. When that voice above calls you home, it is inevitable. You will have to face the reality of your indiscretions and the consequences of your livity in your sojourn on this marvellous planet. When the roll is called up yonder, you will be judged by your conscience and that will signify if you are aptly suited for a reward in 'glory'.

Do not judge another. Philo-sopher Sukhbir Singh once said, "The self is, and can't be experienced because there is no other for it to be experienced by!"

I am etc.,
