Alleged robber shot dead |

An alleged robber was shot and killed and a policeman injured in an incident which took place at an old racetrack in Succaba Gardens in Old Harbour, St. Catherine, on Saturday night. Police reports are that about 8:45 p.m., a policeman was walking along an old racetrack in the Succaba Gardens area when he was accosted by two men, one of whom was armed with a home-made shotgun. They demanded that he hand over his cellular phone and cash to them. This order was complied with, but the men also wanted his Glock service revolver. gun-butted A tussle ensued, during which the policeman was gun-butted in the head, but he also managed to shoot one of his attackers. The policeman called for backup and when his colleagues arrived on the scene, they found one of the men, 17-year-old Ryan Hewitt, with gunshot wounds and clutching a shotgun. Both injured men were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where Hewitt succumbed to his injuries while undergoing surgery. The policeman was treated and later released. Hewitt's accomplice escaped on foot in bushes. The Old Harbour police are continuing their investigation into the incident. |
