Hearse driver gets bail extension

Devon Powell, the 37-year-old hearse driver who is the operator of the Humble Rest Funeral Parlour at Nain in St Elizabeth and who is facing a manslaughter charge, had his $600,000 bail extended when he appeared in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court last Tuesday.

The hearse driver, whose vehicle was involved in a freak accident during a funeral procession, is to return to the Santa Cruz RM Court on August 4, where the matter will again be mention.

Police reports are that about 5 p.m., 25-year-old Richard Constantine, who was a member of the funeral procession, was riding a Honda motorcycle along the main road.

On reaching a section of the road, a truck that was in the procession stopped and Constantine, along with two other motorcyclists, stopped behind the truck.

The hearse, which was behind the motorcycles, suddenly moved off, propelling the three motorcyclists into the truck and pinning two of the riders.

They were rushed to the Black River Hospital, where they were admitted. Constantine died sometime after 10 the following day.
