A 42-year-old taxi operator was shot dead and a woman shot and injured by an unknown assailant at North Parade, downtown Kingston, on Saturday.

Dead is Junior Welsh of St James Road, Kingston 2, while injured is a 46-year-old woman.

Police told THE STAR that about 4:06 p.m., Welsh and a female passenger were sitting in his car when a man armed with a gun approached them. The hoodlum immediately opened fire hitting the two.

Welsh died on the spot. The gunman then escaped in a green Nissan motor car with two other men aboard. The woman was taken to hospital where she was admitted in stable condition.

The Kingston Central police are investigating.
