Beijing Olympic Games 100 metres silver medallist, Sherone Simpson, is down to compete at this weekend's National Cham-pionships. Last week, STAR Sports broke the news that Simpson, four days after entries were closed, was yet to submit an entry. all clear Bruce James, president of MVP Track Club, confirmed Simpson had not sent in an entry but said they were monitoring her progress. He said at the time, if her doctor gave her the all-clear, she would submit a late application. Yesterday, when the preliminary start list was sent out, Simpson's name appeared among the athletes for the 100 and 200 metres. Simpson injured her knee while training in Tianjin, China, prior to the start of the 100-metre heats at the Beijing Games last year. Surgery was carried out on her injured left knee late last year and she is still recovering. James Beckford, who like Simpson, sent in a late application, is listed for the men's long jump. Meanwhile, Olympic double gold medallist, Usain Bolt, headlines a huge field of 100m male sprinters entered for this weekend. heads the field Bolt, winner of the men's 100 and 200 metres at last year's Beijing Games, in 9.69 and 19.30 seconds respectively, heads the field of 63 athletes entered for the men's 100m. Asafa Powell, who anchored Jamaica's sprint relay team, which also included Bolt, Nesta Carter and Michael Frater, to a world record 37.10 seconds clocking, is also down to compete. Frater, national junior record holder Yohan Blake, Steve Mullings, Mario Forsythe and Lerone Clarke are also down to face the starter, along with World Junior and Youth champion Dexter Lee and Nickel Ashmeade. In the women's 100m, Olympic Games 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser heads the field of just 19 women. The field also includes Kerron Stewart, who along with Sherone Simpson, finished in a dead heat for silver in Beijing. Aleen Bailey, Samantha Henry, Sheri-Ann Brooks, Nickesha Anderson, Schillonie Calvert and Simone Facey are among the 19. three individual spots Just over 50 athletes have entered for the men's 200m, and again, Bolt heads the list. Here, Marvin Anderson, Chris Williams, the 2001 World Championships silver medalist, Ainsley Waugh and Xavier Brown will also be fighting for one of three individual spots in the 200m. The men's 400m, which has lacked a real start in recent years has attracted 52 athletes. Sanjay Ayre, Michael Blackwood, Ricardo Chambers, Jermaine Gonzales, Allodin Fothergill, Leford Green and Ansert Whyte should make it an interesting race. Olympic Games silver medallist, Shericka Williams, Rosemarie White and Novlene Williams are among the 20 entered in the women's 400m. |
