The Ministry of Health is advising members of the public who have flu-like symptoms to stay home and take regular influenza medication until they are well. If symptoms persist and become really severe and include vomiting, diarrhoea, or difficulty breathing, they should visit the doctor, health centre or hospital immediately. Persons are being advised to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing to limit the possibility of transmission of any influenza virus to others. Also, wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol based sanitiser. confirmed cases There have so far been 19 confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1) in Jamaica, with no deaths. The ministry expects that since there is now local transmission, there will be an increase in the number of confirmed cases. However, there is no need for persons to panic as the ministry's health team is managing the situation. There is also sufficient medication in the island to treat persons who present with flu-like illnesses, if needed. For more information about Influenza A (H1N1), members of the public may call the ministry's toll-free line at 1-888-663-5683 seven days per week from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
