Bolt's ready ❒ Olympic champ expects competitive National trials

Olympic Games triple gold medallist Usain Bolt believes his performance in Ostrava a week ago, albeit slightly wind assisted, is more than enough of a statement that he is ready for this weekend's National Championships.

"I think although I had a 2.1 wind, I made my statement because I got a bad start ... I think I made a statement there, so I don't need to make any more," Bolt said.

impressive

But, while Bolt sped to an impressive wind-assisted 9.77 at the Golden Spike meet, the athlete cautioned that he may not run that quickly this weekend and is looking to clock more in the region of 9.8.

"For me the trials is always a 9.8 run, because the aim is to make the team," Bolt told journalist yesterday.

not fully in shape

The sprinter is down to run both the 100 and 200 metre double for a place on Jamaica's team to the Berlin World Championships, which will take place from August 15-23. However, while admitting to not being fully in shape, the lanky runner is intent on getting back to his best form. At this weekend's meet he believes more emphasis will have to be placed on the 200m. Bolt is yet to run the event this season, but sped to victory in an impressive 14.35 seconds over 150m in a street race in Manchester, England.

"I am trying to run myself into shape, so I think I will be running the 200m harder, because I have not run any 200m all season," Bolt said.

"I will be putting a little more effort in it (200m)," he added.

World record

Bolt also holds the world record over that distance, clocking 19.30 seconds at the Beijing Olympic games, erasing American Michael Johnson's 12-year mark of 19.32.

In the 100m, Bolt is aware of the form of seasoned athletes like Marvin Anderson, Michael Fraser, Steve Mullings, the promising Yohan Blake and, of course, former world record holder Asafa Powell.

"It's going to be interesting because most of these guys are doing well," Bolt said.
