No need to panic - Medical officer says there is no need to wear mask

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sheila Campbell-Forrester, says there is no need at this time for persons to wear masks during day-to-day activities. Dr Campbell-Forrester says persons need to follow the guidelines provided by the ministry to ensure good hygienic practices to protect against any possible influenza infection.

"The ministry has not recommended that (persons wear masks) at this time. The most important precaution is that everyone to take responsibility for themselves and be considerate of others. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Also wash your hands frequently with soap and water."

confirmed cases

Dr Campbell-Forrester pointed out that local spread was expected but there is no need for persons to panic as the ministry's health team is managing the situation. There are now 21 confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) in Jamaica with no deaths. Two new cases were confirmed yesterday afternoon, one in Kingston and one in St Catherine. One of the cases has been linked to travel to the United States and the other is still being investigated.

As at Wednesday, June 24, the World Health Organisation reports that there are 55,867 confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) worldwide with 238 deaths.
