No school for kids with flu-like symptoms

The Ministry of Health is urging parents not to send their children out to summer school and other events if they have flu-like symptoms.

Director of Emergency Disaster Management and Special Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr Marion Bullock, made the appeal in a release which was issued yesterday.

"We are aware that some children will be attending summer school. If your child is attending summer camp, and they have flu-like symptoms, they need to stay home for at least seven days from the time they begin to feel ill. If they are not well after this period they should stay home until they are well," the release stated.

Such symptoms include fever over 100 degrees, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, Diarrhoea or vomiting.

"Persons are being urged to continue to observe precautionary measures to protect themselves and others from any influenza infection. These include washing hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol based hand-sanitiser and covering nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, preferably with a tissue, which should be disposed of properly," the release said.

There are 32 confirmed cases of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus in the island, with no reported deaths.
