Matterhorn finds natural love for music

Tony Matterhorn - Colin Hamilton

For selector and artiste, Tony Matterhorn, music has always been in his blood. With producers and selectors as relatives on both parents' side, Matterhorn seemed to be destined to follow the beat.

Growing up in Kingston, Matterhorn was always surrounded by family, and says he had countless brothers and sisters.

His father, a music producer in Atlanta, wasn't around much in his later years, but had made appearances in his earlier life.

"He was always a busy person; I saw him last week in Atlanta, but mi nuh really dat close to him. I'll talk to him when I feel like," he said.

His mother, however, is a different case. Having worked three jobs to support her children, Matterhorn spoke with great affection for his mother, whom he "fired" from her jobs when he started to make enough money to support her.

He said: "My mother don't have nothing doing now, mi fire her. She work for me now doing a few little things. Is 'cause of my mother why I do the song Survivor, 'cause she used to work three jobs and she did so busy trying to make ends meet."

It was while his mother was busy at work that Matterhorn got started on Inner City Disco, which operated their sound near his mother's workplace.

When asked if his mother was proud of him, he said: "Yea, mi buy mi modda a house at 24 so she mus' proud of mi."
