GUARD, GUNMAN DIE IN ROBBERY - Two held after attempting to hold up bank

Two of three men who shot and killed a security guard during an alleged robbery attempt at the Portland Co-operative Credit Union Bank in Buff Bay yesterday are now under police guard at the Port Antonio Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.

The men, said to be of Kingston addresses, were captured shortly after noon yesterday during a gun battle with the police, which lasted for more than three hours. The third suspect, who was on the run for several hours, was killed during a shoot-out with the police in the bushy interior of Buff Bay, Portland. He is yet to be identified.

According to the police, three men entered the Portland Co-operative Credit Union Bank in Buff Bay shortly after 9 a.m. posing as customers.

The police say the men then demanded money from a teller, after which he shot and injured the security guard.

The men reportedly relieved the injured guard of his firearm and fled the bank shortly afterwards, making their escape in a waiting motor car.

The security guard, Martin Brown, 39, who was admitted to the Annotto Bay Hospital in a critical state, succumbed to gunshot wounds and died while undergoing treatment.

The Taurus revolver, which was stolen from the security guard, was recovered.

The police say none of the customers in the bank of at the time of the shooting was hurt, and no money was taken from the bank.
