Gunmen and cop attacks |
|||||
Last week gunmen shot three police personnel in less than 24 hours. This is indeed troubling. The thought that those who have the responsibility to protect and serve are themselves under attack is truly frightening. As a matter of fact, eight police personnel have been killed since January and one has to ask why. In last week events, the first incident took place on Wednesday when a woman constable was shot dead in Lawrence Tavern by thugs who also relieved her of her firearm before escaping. On Thursday, two constables were driving in a marked vehicle when armed men approached and opened fire, hitting them and two other persons. Without a doubt, the crime problem in Jamaica is becoming intolerable and it will be only a matter of time before we reach the point of no return. Clearly, criminals stand too much of a chance of walking about freely after committing their heinous crimes and we Jamai-cans only have ourselves to thank for that. If gunmen attack the police in broad daylight then, surely, someone must have seen something. Too often criminals are allowed to hide behind shadows of law-abiding citizens who are just too afraid to say anything. Surely, one can understand why, but if we continue down that road of silence, we will soon have everything to be afraid of. It is that 'code of silence' which has helped us to be dubbed one of the most violent nations in the world and that silence is going to lead us to destruction. |
