Bitter-sweet moments for Jamaican MLS players

Jamaica's Dane Richards.

BRIDGEVIEW, Illinois, (CMC)

Omar Cummings hit a brace and Dane Richards also made scoring headlines but the two Jamaicans endured contrasting results with their teams in US Major League Soccer (MLS) on Sunday.

Cummings was in despair after seeing the two-goal lead — he had given Colorado Rapids — erased by Chicago Fire, who went on to win 3-2 at Toyota Park.

Richards helped struggling New York Red Bulls battle past FC Dallas, also 3-2.

The Chicago Fire sensationally scored three goals in the last 18 minutes to topple visiting Colorado, who led 2-0 on early second-half goals by Cummings.

The Rapids went ahead on 48 minutes when Jamie Smith took a firm shot from 25 yards that Chicago's goalkeeper Jon Busch blocked.

The rebound fell favourably for Cummings, who confidently placed a shot into the right corner from 12 yards.

Cummings scored again in the 58th minute with a beauty.

Picking up a pass at the top right corner of the box, the Jamaica international moved inside for room and cracked a ferocious left-footer into the upper right corner for his eighth goal of the year.

five-goal game

The influential Mexican international Cuauhtemoc Blanco pulled a goal back - from the penalty spot - in the 72nd minute and Mike Banner tied the game in the 85th.

Dasan Robinson then got the winner in stoppage time, heading in a cross from Mike Banner to delight the home fans.

At New York's Giant Stadium, the Red Bulls snapped a wretched 16-game winless streak when they edged past FC Dallas with a late goal from Juan Pablo Angel in the 88th minute of a five-goal game.

Angel had given New York a fourth-minute lead but Dallas equalised in the 19th minute through Dax McCarthy.

Richards sent New York 2-1 up with his second goal of the season in the 27th minute.

Meeting a low cross from John Wolyniec, Richards ran through and side-footed an easy shot past Dario Sala in the FC Dallas goal.

Dave van den Bergh rallied Dallas to draw level for the second time in the match when he scored in the 72nd minute, but Angel grabbed three points for New York with a shot on the rebound two minutes from the end.

New York's unsuccessful run this year includes elimination from the CONCACAF Champions League courtesy of a 4-3 aggregate loss to Trinidadian club W Connection.

The weekend goals by Cummings and Richards lifted the MLS tally for Caribbean players this past week to four.

Last Thursday night, the Grenada international Shalrie Joseph struck his sixth goal of the season and propelled New England Revolution to a 1-0 win over Seattle Sounders.
