Putting money where tears are |
|||||
We cannot begin to imagine the grief which the family and friends of Elvan Mullings are feeling. We do know, though, they are determined to find the person who killed her at her gate in Bridgeport, St Catherine, last Monday night, so much so they have put up a reward of $1 million. That is a substantial amount of money by any measure and we sincerely hope it is met with results worthy of the effort and that those who have pooled their resources for the cause will find some measure of satisfaction and closure in this terrible incident. We know more about Crime Stop's advertisements than we do the programme's level of success, and with good reason. After all, getting information in a society which is notoriously tight-lipped when it really counts (and not only about criminal matters) is not easy in the first place. Blabbering on about its successes could just get those who have been 'informed upon' upset all over again, maybe with deadly consequences. We find it very heartening that Mullings' loved ones have decided to put some money where their tears are. Let us not forget that the Jews have done just that in hunting down Nazi criminals, no matter their age or condition. Call it revenge, call it retribution, call it what you will. We just call it justice. |
