Gilbert hoping for late burst

Dover race driver Dr Don Gilbert - File

He has not been among the big names who dominate and take the chequered flag frequently at Dover race meets but Dr Don Gilbert is hoping to produce a late burst and upstage the top drivers in the MP1 and IP 33 classes, when the final event of the year gets underway on Heroes Day, October 19.

Dr Gilbert who started his racing career in 1996 is one of the most consistent competitors at the circuit track in St Ann. His biggest achievement came two years ago when he won the MP1 Class championship.

"My most memorable moment that year, was when I beat Mark Carey in his Honda Civic," the former Wolmer's Boys and Calabar High student said.

His Suzuki GTI vehicle is being prepared by Peter Moodie's NG Racing team. Up to a year ago, the Montego Bay-based orthopedician could be observed, towing his race car, all the way from western Jamaica to Dover Raceway.

"At the time a wrecker was not affordable," said Dr Gilbert, who would do all the work on his car on race days. Since then, he has hired a personal mechanic who is now assisting him at every meet.

"He is always at the track, no matter what," confirmed Hilary Jardine, president of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club.

This is the last chance for the title chasing drivers and the word on the street is that Chris Campbell is set to dispose of David Summerbell and Doug Gore. But as the tension continues to mount and the competitors intensify their preparations, Peter Rae is currently conducting major work on his RX7 Mazda, which could create problems for the favourites.

If he is ready, then Peter 'Bull' Thompson, could add to the excitement, with his RX7 Mazda. Tedroy 'Teddy' Burton has also promised to spring some surprises and the crowd will be waiting for him to deliver.
