A traditional patois slogan, 'tun yu hand mek fashion', can best describe women from Power of Faith Ministries' Senior Citizens Club who went all out to impress during an expo at the Power of Faith Ministries Multi-purpose Complex recently. There were craft items, inclusive of crochet and handbags, made from different materials, such as crocus, wool and cotton. There were also plants, such as pepper, peppermint and rosemary, and designs were even printed on a foam container for use as an accessory box. Michelle Dixon, secretary of the Senior Citizens Department at Power of Faith Ministries, said the brainchild of this venture was a member of the church, who thought that an outlet was needed for seniors to showcase their talent. It was also in keeping with Senior Citizens' Month, which is celebrated in September each year. "This expo is basically to showcase the skills of our senior citizens, their craft, flowers and other creative skills," Dixon told THE PORTMORE STAR. participating branches The participants were drawn from three branches of the church, inclusive of the headquarters in Portmore, Grove Road in Kingston and Bog Walk, St Catherine. Booth holders shared information and offered a variety of services to patrons on hand. These booth holders included Capital and Credit Securities, which promoted retirement products and investment plans; Guardian Life Insurance Company, which promoted life insurance and investment schemes; the National Health Fund, which stressed the benefits of joining the scheme; Rural Agricultural Development Authority, which encouraged backyard gardening; a duo from the St Catherine Fire Prevention Department; the Diabetes Association of Jamaica, which offered blood-pressure checks and foot care for diabetics; and Scott, Bhoorasingh and Bonnick Attorneys-at-law, which gave general legal services. |
