Man on fraud charge faces court

A man accused of using fraudulent cheques to illegally obtain $1.2M from an organisation's accounts, had his day in court on Tuesday.

The accused, Curtis Williams, is facing several counts of forgery, uttering a forged document and obtaining money by false pretence.

It is alleged that the accused, a 42-year-old from Back Pasture in St Catherine, was employed to Orbus Technologies as an accounting officer. It is alleged that between November 2007 and April 2008, the accused forged 33 cheques in his name and the names of others for a total figure of $1,295,122.89.

It is further alleged that Williams forged the signature of the company's owner on some of the cheques whereas on others he increased the figures. He is accused of tendering the cheques and pocketing the money. The theft was reportedly discovered when an audit was conducted.

Williams' bail was extended until December 11 when the matter returns to court.
