Independence City Primary Embracing our heritage

Grade two students of Independence City Primary perform a medley of folk songs (work songs).

Jamaica's Heritage was alive and well at Independence City Primary as the school marked Heritage week, with a concert on the school's grounds recently.

Grades one through to six, performed traditional folk songs, plays, ring games and dramatic pieces, highlighting the rich culture passed down by the nation's ancestors.

Grade one did a series of ring games, including 'Blue bird', and 'The farmer in the dell'. Grade two did traditional work and folk songs, while grade three did a dramatisation of an 'Anancy' story that gripped the audience from start to finish.

African ancestry

Grade four danced into the hearts of their peers, teachers and parents, as they performed to traditional folk dances embedded in our African ancestry and grade five did love folk songs.

Before the show got on the way, Hopeton Murray of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) spoke on the historical facts about our heritage. The school's principal, Jacenta O'Connor, also uttered similar sentiments.

The event went under the theme: 'Believe in Jamaica ... Embracing Our Heritage'.
