Angelo Laurence, Star Writer Audley Dwyer, a 26-year-old vendor died in the Mandeville Regional Hospital yesterday, after he was stabbed in the Mandeville market, Manchester. Witnesses said Dwyer, who lived in Pimento Hill district in the parish, had a week long dispute with another man, who accused him of not spending enough to bury his nine-year-old sister three weeks ago. Dwyer's sister, who was a student at the Mandeville Primary and Junior High School, died while being transported to the hospital after complaining of feeling ill while at school last month. According to Delroy Dwyer, father of the dead man, last week Wednesday his son and the assailant had a dispute over how much money should have been spent to bury the deceased's sister. The senior Dwyer told THE STAR that he intervened at the time and thought the matter had been put to rest. However, at approximately 9 a.m. yesterday, when his son went to his stall in the market, he was immediately attacked and stabbed several times. The distraught father said the suspect is not a relative and is unknown to him. The Mandeville police have taken one man into custody in connection with the killing, but has refused to release his name. Thirty one people have been murdered in Manchester since the start of the year. |
