Adams' support

The lead story in yesterday's STAR was just a quick glance into how popular former Senior Superintendent of Police, Reneto Adams, truly is.

According to the story, Internet users have taken to the popular site Facebook and organised a group to show support for the top cop. Members of the group have come together to express their belief that the cop is the best man for the position of commissioner of police.

SSP Adams applied for the post before and was overlooked but he has applied again. It is interesting to see just how quickly and openly Jamaicans rally around a person or purpose that they truly believe in. Despite the controversy that has dogged SSP Adams, it is clear that his demeanour and strategies have found favour with many - many who would like to see him sit in the 'big chair'.

There are, however, those who believe that to name him as commissioner would be a very big mistake. One thing is for sure however, among both his supporters and detractors, and that is that this job, a tough one, needs a tough man, or perhaps even a woman.

The problem of crime has reached disgustingly disturbing levels in our country and more and more each day it seems as though law-abiding citizens are living at the sheer mercy of gunmen, rapists and thieves. Something needs to change and it needs to change now.

Whether the job goes to SSP Adams or to anyone else, Jamaicans will be watching and waiting for big changes.
