No respect for the elderly

The lead story in Saturday's paper is shocking and is a clear reflection of just how far our society has fallen.

The story relates an incident where a 60-year-old man was stabbed and pushed from a bus during a robbery. It is reported that the man was travelling on a Coaster, when men held up the bus and robbed him. He was then stabbed and thrown off.

It is disgraceful when this is the sort of treatment meted out to a senior citizen on a bus. Gone are the days when senior citizens were treated with respect, especially on public transportation. It is bad enough that these hoodlums decided to rob passengers, but to attack the man and then throw him into the streets as though his life meant nothing to them, is incomprehensible.

We sincerely hope that the other passengers on the bus were able to take note of these vagabonds and will help the police to bring them to justice. We need to realise that it could have been any of us who could have been dealt with in such a horrible manner.

It is time that we take back our country from these criminals who have been allowed to do as they please. But, the police and the army cannot work alone. The help of citizens is needed in the fight against crime and until that help is extended, very little will change.
