Beaten end of first round finalist St Georges regained the Digicel Premier League (DPL) top spot after battling to an exciting 1-1 draw with the resurgent Arnett Gardens team in their match-up at Lynch Park yesterday.

St Georges now sit on 27 points, one more than defending champions and first round champions Tivoli Gardens, who were idle due to the funeral service for their former player Oraine Simpson, who was laid to rest yesterday.

It was only the second time that the Portland-based team was dropping points at home, but things looked worse for the Braxton Hyre-coached team at one stage, after Cornel Chin-Sue's 68th minute free kick scratched the paint off the upright, before settling in the net, giving the visitors the lead.

lone strike

Daniel Shaw replied in the 70th minute, in similar fashion, with his 24 yard free kick preserving his team's unbeaten home record.

Meanwhile, Waterhouse got their DPL second round campaign off to winning start through a lone strike by substitute Roberto Fletcher, whose 78th minute goal was enough to see off a determined Rivoli United at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium.

In a game that took almost 80 minutes to provide any real excitement, the speedy Fletcher out-hustled his marker in the penalty box, before coolly dispatching his shot beyond goalkeeper Leon Goffe from just outside the six-yard area, moments after coming unto the field.

Winning coach Geoffrey Maxwell was happy for the win and believes his team is beginning to show their true worth.

Said Maxwell, "We set ourselves a target, there are eleven games ahead of us and if it is possible we would like to win all of them, our next game is against Tivoli Gardens which will be a difficult game. I think the team is improving from week to week."

dissatisfaction

Rivoli's Oneil Thomas was disappointed with his team's loss in concentration during the final moments and pointed out his dissatisfaction with the output of his substitutes.

"We planned the game tactically but we lost concentration and that resulted in the goal being scored. I think we put in players that we thought could deliver, but I don't think they delivered for us today."

Boys' Town secured their fourth straight win with a 1-0 victory over Village United at Collie Smith Drive, while Portmore United defeated August Town 1-0 at Ferdie Neita Park.
