BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa: Jermaine 'Teddy' Johnson was in the groove yesterday, hitting some very powerful shots to score from every angle, during the Reggae Boyz's penultimate training session ahead of their friendly international against South Africa, at the Free State Stadium (Vodacom Park) tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Jamaica time). "It's a long time I haven't seen Jermaine Johnson in this type of mood," Jamaica's head coach, Theodore Whitmore, said, following the team's training session yesterday. The flank-playing midfielder, who joined up with the Jamaica squad from England-based League Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night in Johannesburg, credits his outstanding shooting to additional work being done at his club, where he has scored five times this season. "More time, when I am training in England, after training, I do some shooting and practice with my left foot and it's coming along. I still need to do more," he said, adding that "the youths are around me and I want them to see me doing well, so I just go out there and did my best." The finishing added to the quality of the session, geared mostly at fine-tuning the team's preparation for the South Africa clash. Johnson said the Boyz are pumped up to win for Oraine Simpson, his former Jamaica and Tivoli Gardens teammate who was laid to rest yesterday.
"It's like a good rivalry between us and South Africa. The last time we played them over here we drew 0-0," he said.
"We want to win for Oraine (Simpson) as well, so we'll be motivated."
The tempo of yesterday's training session indicated the players' eagerness, which unfortunately, resulted in goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers and midfielder Bryan Bayliss picking up injuries.
Bayliss rejoined the training session after being treated with ice by team physician Dr Mark Sanderson, while Sawyers had his ankle strapped with ice after the session, following a challenge with Dane Richards when he advanced to clear the ball.
Incidentally, the other goalie in the squad, Dwayne Miller, is carrying a shoulder injury picked up in a Premier League match back home. Both keepers said they are okay to play but Whitmore is concerned. "My main concern now is the goalkeepers," said an obviously displeased Whitmore. "Shawn (Sawyers) is suffering from an ankle injury and Miller (Dwayne) is suffering from a shoulder injury."
It is a hugely contrasting situation to the glowing prospects hitting from the boot of Johnson, who is looking to transfer some of the goodies from his detail at Sheffield into the Jamaica game tomorrow.
"My role (at Sheffield) is to get in mostly crosses and make scoring chances. My crosses are getting better, as well as my fitness. So overall, things are improving."
That was evident in yesterday's training session. Johnson's coach and teammates will surely be hoping that when they face South Africa, the players' pace and accuracy of his finishing are just the same.
