Slow start to Wet Sundaze |

Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter
Fashion was supposed to be the highlight of the night but it almost went unnoticed at Wet Sundaze, which was held at Hillview Avenue, St Andrew, on Sunday. A little after midnight, in the middle of Hands On Me by Bobby Valentino and Mavado, the slender models started to strut outfits designed by Minka. They wore knitted dresses, blouses, bikinis and shorts by the designer. And although there was red cloth taped to the ground to give the appearance of a red carpet, a cameraman and photographer recording the action as the women modelled, some people just walked right through the show. Little or no difference was made when the selector told patrons coming in that a show was in progress, as they simply disregarded everything. While the modelling was in progress, most people seemed more interested in the songs that were being played such as Rihanna's Te Amo and Jay-Z's Empire State Of Mind. For a party that should have started at 6 p.m., it was a bit of a surprise to see an almost empty venue at 10:30 p.m. Although women enter free, there was an obviously greater percentage of men present. It was not until about midnight that the bulk of the crowd, mostly women, started strolling in. Luckily, the promoters decided to extend the event until 2 a.m. At 1 a.m., DJ Amber announced that it was officially party time and she selected some recent 'wining' songs that changed the vibe in the party. The patrons were no longer staring at each other and into to open space; they started to get active. There was intense gyrating to songs like Vybz Kartel's Like A Movie and Mavado's Let Me Go. There were lots of forwards for Vegas' Gallis and Chase Cross' Better Days. And, in the middle of the high energy, it was announced that the 'Icon 15' was about to begin. This segment is dedicated to an icon in the music business. This week, Beenie Man was the featured artiste. In the 15 minutes, the selector played several of his old and recent songs from Memories up to Eva Clean. As expected, Ding Dong's Holiday got its many pull-ups. But Merital Family's My Money Ha Ha got some patrons in a frenzy and they seemed to have no choice but to pour their liquor on the ground. Although, it does not depict the love of the upcoming holiday season, Mavado and Flexxx's Gully Christmas got a big response. And so did Aidonia's Evil Head. As the night progressed, the selector played Secret Lovers by Alaine and Chino, which had a different vibe from the music that was being played earlier.
