10 questions with Konshens |

Konshens is known for his hard-hitting lyrics. And we guessed that the artiste would be happy to voice his opinion on a very variety of issues. With this in mind, we asked Konshens, our STAR of the month his take on current issues in 'Ten Questions with'. What is your New Year's resolution? Konshens: "Dis year, mi affi be di winner again." If you were the prime minister, what are the first three things you would do to improve the country? Konshens: "My first concern would be the educational system. It's still too hard to acquire information for the average inner-city yute, even in technological times. Secondly, invest in talent development and shelters fi homeless yutes. Di street yutes need a way out. Thirdly, implement heavier penalties fi man weh kill elders and babies." If you could have a dream clash, who would you like to see clash at Sting this year? Konshens: "Me and one a dem sexy girl yah inna di biz clash inna di bedroom! Otherwise, mi did love the gaza-gully clash but some likkle man a tek it serious now so mi nuh inna nutten wid dem, me will gwaan bus blank inna dance." Gay activists in recent times have been putting a lot of pressure on reggae and dancehall artistes. What do you think is the next step that needs to be taken to resolve this conflict? Konshens: "Mi nuh know yaa man, every man need fi just keep dem self to dem self. Di artistes dem weh a chat up dem mouth need fi bill because all a dem associate wid homosexuals one way or another in this music business, and homosexuals need fi accept the fact that this culture is extremely homophobic and won't embrace them ever. Everybody need to keep demself to demself and be professional." The Order of Jamaica was recently given to sprinter Usain Bolt, do you think the government acted prematurely by giving him this honour too quickly? Konshens: "No, not at all; him do something great that has never been done and probably won't happen again, all the awards and honours wah him get him deserve and mi glad dem neva wait till years from now at him graveside like wah dem normally do." If your daughter were a little older, how would you tell her to interpret the Gully-Gaza rivalry? Konshens: "She would be properly equipped mentally to analyse the situation herself, and interpret it like a smart person." A number of new artistes have used the tutelage of established artistes to 'buss' in the business. Would. you recommend this path? Konshens: "Whatever floats your boat. There's no formula to buss again, so however you can get it, gwaan." It's almost been a year since the Broadcasting Commission put restrictions on what is suitable for airplay. Do you think it has changed the musical landscape in any way? Konshens: "Yes, I think the radio is much better now caw yuh can listen it wid yuh pickney and no haffi fret sey sumthing ago escape. And I don't think the music get soft either; it just set how it fi set now." If there were one cause in Jamaica that you would like to undertake as a charity project, what would that be? Konshens: "I would probably attack the issue I mentioned above, talent development, 'ghetto yute don't waste di talent wah di fadda gi yuh, ' mi believe inna dat." Do you think Reneto Adams would make a good commissioner of police and why? Konshens: Mi nuh have no police comments fi di public, (laughs), especially bout dat man, (laughs). - Krista Henry |
