JCF issues approved wrecker companies list

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), in a bid to regulate the wrecker industry, has issued a list of wrecker companies that are approved to tow vehicles whose owners have breached the Road Traffic Act.

Director of communications for the JCF, Karl Angell, said the list was created to minimise the discomfort suffered by motorists who often complained that some police personnel misuse the system. He said the JCF has also received complaints about the cost of wrecker services.

The list names specific wrecker companies that have been approved in each parish to work along with the police and according to Angell, the list will be published about six or seven times in local newspapers starting last Friday.

In a release issued yesterday, the JCF advised motorists to be very vigilant when their vehicles are being towed. Motorists are also being urged to pay attention to the name of the company as well as to the regulation number worn by the police who are involved in the process. The numbers on the police service vehicles should also be noted.

The release advised that if an unapproved wrecker company is being used by the police, affected parties should immediately, or as quickly as possible, contact the police by calling the Inspectorate of the Constabulary on the toll-free line 1-888-429-5523. Reports can also be made to Police Control at 119.
