With five killed in 10 days on the streets in St Catherine North, police in the division said a zero-tolerance approach is on for traffic violators. The latest of these deaths occurred yesterday when Ryan Salmon, 22, and Damon Levy, 25, of Windsor Heights, Central Village in the parish, were killed after their vehicle had a head-on collision. The Spanish Town police said about 6:30 a.m. Salmon was driving a Suzuki Swift motor car towards Spanish Town with Levy on board. When they reached about 400 metres from the Angels roundabout, Salmon lost control of the Swift which collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero. Both men were injured and taken to hospital where they died. This followed the deaths of Patrick Allen, 52, Wesley Sankaar, 45, and Paul Nelson, 42, all from Kingston, who were killed after a Ford Explorer in which they were travelling overturned on the toll road on December 17. Head of the St Catherine North Traffic Department, Inspector Everton Laidley, said the police will spare not effort in dealing with persons who show no respect for the road. "There are more deaths, more than last year this time, therefore we have to redouble our effort to tackle the problems that contribute to the spike in the deaths," Laidley said. Thirty-six people have been killed in the division since January. This is seven more than those killed over the same period last year. |
