Thompson takes double at Laurel Park

Winston Thompson - File

LAUREL, Maryland (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Winston Thompson scored two contrasting wins at Laurel Park over the weekend, to collect his sixth triumph of the new season.

He steered the chestnut colt Draw the Tap to a come-from-behind win in race one before hustling the leaders with the roan mare Swear Allegiance to capture race five.

Despite Thompson's handsome double, he remained in mid-table, still 10 wins off the leaders Erick Rodriguez and Harry Vega who were both locked on 16 victories.

Thompson opened his account going six furlongs in race one, when he got the outside bet away nicely and settled him at the back of the field.

Country Water took the field through its early fractions, with the rest of the field jostling for positions. Entering the stretch, however, Thompson swung Draw the Tap wide and he responded well, accelerating to steadily overhaul the leaders and reach the post 1-1/4 lengths clear in a time of one minute, 14.41 seconds.

In race five over a mile on dirt, Swear Allegiance chased the early pace as Snuck in the Back and then Blondie's Halos disputed the lead.

Thompson bided his time before putting the mare to the front entering the stretch and she drew away under good work, to finish 3-3/4 lengths clear.
