When a nation cares |
|||||
Not all stories have a happy ending, but the story of Monica Morgan and her daughter Shania Davis is different. Last Wednesday, THE STAR brought a story in which Morgan's plight - her inability to bury her daughter who had died last November - was highlighted. The story revealed that the 13-year-old had died from rheumatic fever on November 14 last year, but because of a lack of funds, her family was unable to bury her. Thanks to the kindness of readers, and one man in particular, Sunday was a happy day for Morgan as she finally got to lay her daughter to rest. After the story was published in THE STAR, many persons expressed a desire to help, opting to pay all the outstanding fees. This story is proof that although times and things may be hard in Jamaica, we have not lost our spirit of giving and caring. The fact that so many persons showed an interest is proof that we are not as bad as many would think, and in fact, underneath it all, we are a caring nation. Our readers' kind gestures have allowed one woman's painful episode to come to an end and she can finally get the closure she needs and try to put her life back together. If more Jamaicans spent more time nurturing this caring side and less time engaging in violence, our country would be much better off. |
