The McKay sisters, Margaret and Tasha, of Oberlin High, were in record-breaking form on yesterday at the opening day of the two-day JN/JPS Eastern Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

In the class three 1,500m, Margaret stopped the clock at 5:05.15 to beat her old mark of 5:05.19, which was established last year.

Sonique Richards of Glengoffe (5:06.25) and Sherene Cain of Yallahs (5:15.70) were second and third, respectively.

In the class one 1,500m, Tasha lowered the old mark significantly from 5:26.81 to 5:07.19. Glengoffe's Crystal Palmer also went below the previous mark which was set in 2007, by running 5:08.57, while Stacy-Ann Panton of Happy Grove (5:39.81) finished third.

Paul Bogle's Robert Thomas threw 39.01 metres to erase the 35.09m mark set in 2007, in the class one boys' discus. Buff Bay's Roland Carr was second with a throw of 37.90, while Chadwayne Lee's 34.60-m throw earned him third place.

The day's fourth record was established in the preliminary round of the sprints - the boys' class three 100m - in which Morant Bay's Roman Foster (11.68) erased the previous mark of 11.69.

Meanwhile, defending champions Oberlin lead the overall standings after 19 finals on 149.5 points. They are followed by Buff Bay (132), Morant Bay (77.5), Glengoffe (60.5) and Yallahas (47.5).

In the girls' section, Oberlin are also out front on 104.5 points, ahead of Buff Bay (91), Glengoffe (45.5), Morant Bay (40.5) and Yallahs (38.5), which round off the top five teams.

The top five boys' schools are Oberlin (45), Buff Bay (41), Morant Bay (37), Titchfield (25) and St Mary High (21).

A total of 61 finals will be contested on today's final day, which is set to start at 9 a.m.
