Resetting the 'borderline' |
|||||
It is not only acceptable but also expected that entertainers are different. After all, that is how they stand out from the pack. So when they are very different in that crucial area of life - sex - it is acceptable, even when they go over the 'borderline' of what is considered normal. For example, it was OK to have Boy George, a man, dressing as a woman. In Jamaica, we have had our own entertainment figures who are pushing the sexual boundaries, in a country where there are many oral laws about what is appropriate or not, sexually. Two of them, one of whom has deliberately placed himself on the dreaded borderline and another who was outed by a picture which slipped out, have broken those laws. Shebada and Lisa Hyper appeared in a very striking picture in yesterday's STAR, and it is very significant that they can be extremely comfortable cavorting in the public eye. We dare say a few years ago they would be justifiably nervous about appearing before a judgemental public. The fact that they can be the life of the party speaks a lot to how much things have changed. Shebada and Lisa Hyper may or may not have changed things, but certainly they are markers in the resetting of sexual borderlines in Jamaica. Right now, they are outstanding exceptions, but how many people who are quietly like them do they represent? And how many people will they inspire to come out of their shells? |
