FORMER national junior representative Shermaine Williams was in great form recently at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Virginia, as she had three top finishes to help her team Johnson C. Smith University to amass 87 points to finish second in the female division of the CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The team finished behind winners St Augustine College who scored 124 points. A gold medallist at last year's Pan Am Junior Championships in the 100 metres hurdles, Williams was in sparkling form in the women's 60 metres hurdle as she posted a fast 8.10 seconds to win the event. Despite competing at the NCAA Division-Two level, the time done by Williams, a former Convent of Mercy representative, was the fifth-fastest among all collegiate female athletes in the United States so far this season. Following her brilliant run in the hurdles, she returned to finish second in the 60 metres dash, clocking a time of 7.55 seconds and placed third in the 200 metres with a time of 24.78 seconds. She was also a member of her school's 4x400 metres relay team which finished second to St Augustine College. 100 metres hurdles Williams' teammate Rosemarie Carty, also a former Convent of Mercy athlete who was second to Williams in the 100 metres hurdles at the Junior Pan Am Games in Trinidad last year, was also among the medals. She had a second place finish behind her teammate in the 60 metres hurdles in 8.36 seconds, while finishing third in the 60 metres in 7.61 seconds. Haiti's Barbara Pierre, competing for St Augustine, had a double as she won the 60 metres in 7.31 and the 200 metres in 24.42 seconds. Pierre is the fastest collegiate female athlete so far in the 60 metres after clocking 7.18 seconds late last month. Jamaica's Berlin World Championships representative, Leford Green, competing for Johnson C. Smith had a third-place finish among the men in the 400 metres where he clocked 48.79 seconds.
