Centerstage with Chevaughn

Chevaughn Clayton - Contributed

Stage Name: Chevaughn

Real Name: Chevaughn Clayton

Birth Month: October

How did you get started in the business?

Chevaughn: I come from a very musical family, so music was everywhere - school and church, so I've been singing since age four. My first major step was the Tastee Talent Competition in 1997, and during school I competed in the JCDC competitions from 1997 to 2001.

What has been your greatest challenge in the business yet?

Chevaughn: Major challenge has been just being patient with my growth and trusting my ideas. I love the industry more than I do the business, so over the years I have always preferred to be loved and respected for my quality work than the hype.

What have you been up to lately?

Chevaughn: Well, I just got back from a six-week tour of Europe with Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel. Right before that we (C Sharp) did a two-week tour of the United States. I'm now back in Jamaica recording with as many producers as possible, determined to build up my catalogue, music that will last for life. So look out for Tables with me, Craig Jackson, Ding Dong and Chris Martin, produced by Notice Production. Also a song called Music by Starkutt Records.

Do you look up to any specific artiste and why?

Chevaughn: Well growing up it was Sam Cooke, Donnie McLurkin and Donny Hathaway and Peter Tosh. But most recently I've just been listening to everyone creating good music. Beres Hammond is my most favourite male vocalist, just genius.

Are you happy with the way things are going for your musical career right now?

Chevaughn: I have been thankful, thankful that God is allowing many more to listen to my music. I have invested a whole lot of years, learning the ropes from my experiences with so many artistes that I can only smile and look forward to only greater things. Give thanks to my family, which has been very supportive over the years and my friendships, which I give so much to and gain so much from.

Do you have any advice for young artistes coming up?

Chevaughn: Put God first. Love the music purely and the music will love you unconditionally. Trust your ideas and always remember that there is always more to learn and further roads to go. Give thanks in all things.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Chevaughn: I tell you, when I realised that my purpose on this Earth was to do music, I always saw myself in the middle of a huge stage with blue lights shining on me. So I see myself performing on many more stages and recording more fruitful and substantial songs that the world will love and survive on for eternity.
