Gone too soon |

The lead story in yesterday's STAR was quite heart-rending. The story, that of seven-year-old Janelle Smith, who died after collapsing during a routine 'round of playing' at her school, is a sobering one that reminds us how fragile life is. According to the story, Janelle showed no signs of illness. It was, therefore, a surprise to her family that the sprightly child has simply dropped dead. Needless to say, her mother, and indeed her family are in a state of shock and disbelief. And, to make matters worse, they are yet to receive any answers or explanations about the child's death as no post-mortem has yet been done. Life is truly unpredictable and this story serves to emphasise that fact and to encourage us to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones as we never know when the privilege of having them around will expire. We are certain that on that fateful Thursday, the afternoon started out like any other for Janelle's parents; however, it will be a day that they won't soon forget. We hope the post-mortem and its findings will bring closure to this family, and that somehow they will be able to pick up the pieces and try to continue with their lives. Losing a child, we imagine, is the hardest thing any parent can go through, but with time, the support of family and friends and God, peace can again be achieved. |
